A tripod forces you to slow down, so you can check your settings, review the composition, and exposure to make sure you\u2019ve got everything right. Your tripod also helps give your eyes a chance to look away from the camera so you can actually make eye contact with your subjects. The family will feel more comfortable looking at you, rather than staring straight into your lens.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"Shoot-in-manual-mode\"><b>Shoot in manual mode<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the designated photographer, you have control of all the elements when you\u2019re setting up your camera, and choosing the time of day and the location carefully. Once you\u2019ve set up, the exposure won&#8217;t need changing. But if you put it in aperture or shutter priority mode, depending on the metering mode selected, the camera could choose a slightly different exposure for each frame as the focus changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Inconsistent exposures create more work in post-processing. It also can cause a slight color shift, increase noise (if underexposed), and other undesirable things. To keep your exposures consistent throughout the whole shoot, use manual mode on your camera.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"Lock-the-focus\"><b>Lock the focus<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3875\" src=\"https:\/\/www.photojaanic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/12\/family-photography-guide-photojaanic-17.jpg\" alt=\"Camera focus\" width=\"4615\" height=\"3077\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.us.photojaanic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/12\/family-photography-guide-photojaanic-17.jpg 4615w, https:\/\/www.us.photojaanic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/12\/family-photography-guide-photojaanic-17-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.us.photojaanic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/12\/family-photography-guide-photojaanic-17-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.us.photojaanic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/12\/family-photography-guide-photojaanic-17-1080x720.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 4615px) 100vw, 4615px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can lock the focus by using either the focus lock, back button focus, or manual focus. With any of these options, the focus won&#8217;t change from shot to shot. If you use the shutter button to focus and someone moves a little bit so that the focus dot hits the background, you got a bad and blurred photo. Watch out for the focus on your photo, and preferably keep it on a tripod, so that it does not auto shift.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify\"><span id=\"Pick-the-right-aperture\"><b>Pick the right aperture<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If your subjects are on the same focal plane (lining up in a single line), shoot at f\/2.8 to get them all in focus and with a nice background. For big groups, bump your aperture up a full stop to f\/4.0 (if that makes you uncomfortable, you can always go for f\/5.6). If there are too many rows, go to at least f\/5.6 and maybe even f\/8.0. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A lens sharpest aperture isn\u2019t actually its highest number (like f\/22).
